Every Xbox 360 owner has heard of it and at some point of owning one has either had it happen or seen the pictures on the internet. Well, just after 3.20am this morning, my 360 finally decided that (after four and a half years) it had enough and displayed two flashing red lights. Panic turned into anger as I had no idea what to do, and all I could think of was, “why now!?” I wouldn’t mind, but I didn’t do anything different in the way I was using and storing it. I was looking over Google to see if it was repairable and that didn’t really help. Everything that I’ve read seems to be contradicted by something else. External fans aren’t recommended as they seem to hinder the 360’s cooling system rather than aiding it. I had been playing Devil May Cry HD Collection at the time and didn’t notice anything wrong until it was too late. I read on a site that placing the 360 on glass helps to keep it cool, but I fail to see how. Anyway, it was a method that I decided to try. I placed the 360 in an open space, place the glass under it. The first thing that I tried is leaving the HDD off of the console. There was no problem (I didn’t try a game, I should’ve done) so I just left it on the home screen. I turned the console off and reattached the HDD. Everything was still okay. The next step was to try a game. I fist used the Devil May Cry HD Collection. Not long after three minutes, the roaring of the fan had started to become louder. I took the disc out and the console became quieter. Took out DMC and put in Fable III. Not long after the game had loaded, my character took a few steps and the console started to roar again. Luckily, I took out the disc, and got back to the home screen when three red lights appeared and the screen went blank. If I turn it on again, I know exactly what will happen... the Red Ring of Death.
I’ve left it at three lights because there is no point in turning it on again. The console has now been packed away. Well, the leads and the controller have, but not the console. It’s still sat on its shelf, covered over with a towel (mainly so I don’t have to look at it and I also know that it’s unusable). If I had two of them, they’d make brilliant bookends (lol... sorry.) To be honest, the 360 is my favourite console, and I am slightly devastated that it no longer works. I have never had a console fail on me before. At the moment, there will be no replacement, and thankfully, there are no games to be released for this console for the rest of the year. Although, I will miss playing Fable. Flicking through an old Official Xbox 360 magazine I found this top 50 of very, very rubbish games.
Any games that I have/have played will be marked in BOLD. 1.Duke Nukem Forever 2.Avatar: The Last Airbender 3.Sonic the Hedgehog 4.Leisure Suit Larry 5.Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows pt.1 6.Destroy all Humans: Path of the Furon 7.Clash of the Titans 8.Shellshock 2: Blood Trials 9.Transformers: The Games 10.Quantum Theory 11.Fighters Uncaged 12.Turning Point: Fall of Liberty 13.Thor: God of Thunder 14.Superman Returns 15.Ironman 16.The X Factor 17.Black Water 18.RogueWarrior 19.Amy 20.Lost: Via Domus 21.Saw 22.GI Joe: Rise of Cobra 23.Tony Hawk:Ride 24.Hour of Victory 25.Hulk Hogan’s Main Event 26.N3II: Ninety Nine Nights 27.Rock Revolution 28.Soldier of Fortune 29.SCORE International Baja 1000 30.Sniper: Ghost Warrior 31.Terminator Salvation 32.Bullet Witch 33.Bomberman Act: Zero 34. Vampire Rain 35.Spiderman: Friend or Foe 36.Rise of Nightmares 37. Knights Contract 38.Raven Squad: Operation Hidden Dagger 39. NBA Unrivalled 40.Wing Commander Arena 41.Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad 42.The Cursed Crusade 43.Damnation 44.0 Day attack on Earth 45.X-Blades 46.Kengo: Legend of the 9 47.MorphX 48.Infernal: Hell’s vengeance 49. Mind Jack 50.Two Worlds. As you can see, there are only a few that I have played, but they stand up to the rep that they are bad. Sonic the Hedgehog: I’m pretty sure the thing that sticks in most about this game is the kiss between hedgehog and human... What were Sega thinking? The worst 3D Sonic game in existence (IMO). Bullet Witch: I thought it may have been somewhere between Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, but with zombies... how wrong I was. Vampire Rain: Still in the collection. I’m not a ‘stealth’ gamer, and I don’t pretend to be (hence why I don’t play Metal Gear Solid). I only bought it because the word ‘Vampire’ stood out (and I like Vampires. Always have done... even before Twilight came out... and no I haven’t seen it... I don’t want to either). Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad I suppose the pervy, hentai lover in me bought this. I do like this game. There’s nothing quite like slashing Zombies in half with a Katana... although zombies can get ‘immune’ to one type of attack and then it kicks your butt as you try to find another way to defeat them. X-Blades: I've played it on the PS3. I thought it looked good.... lesson here is: Don’t judge a game by its cover. So, now you know what the rubbish games are, you can avoid them like the plague... Lately (at night), I have been playing Fable 2 Game of the Year Edition. It’s not the first time that I have completed it though, however, it is the first time that I have come across this ‘glitch’. Playing a quest where you look for Captain Dread’s treasure, my character was on top of a cliff edge. Beneath, blue beetles. One of these little so-and-so’s decided that he would ‘hide’ behind a rock, but it wasn’t very well covered and I could still see it, although, I couldn’t hit it. Getting very confused at which buttons I was pressing, I pressed 'A’ for my Hero to jump from the cliff, backward rolled, fired a Will Spell and fired my gun simultaneously. The result left my hero like this: As if thinking she was still in the middle of a cliff dive. Instead of walking, she eerily glided along the ground, and in the water, she stayed in the same pose. She could still dig for treasure though... and open chests.
As hilarious as it was, I saved the game and quit. When I went back to it, I was very suspicious that something like that could happen again. Starting another quest, I thought she had ‘glitched’ again. Stressed and unable to think, I quit the game yet again. Loaded the game, problem was still happening. Quit the game. For the next few hours I went back to an older game of Fable 2. It was dawning on me that I may have to delete the save. I went back to the ‘glitched’ save. To my stupidity I didn’t realise that I had turned off the ‘safety’ (safety keeps you from attacking innocent bystanders, rabbits and other wildlife that roam Albion). Feeling like a Grade ‘A’ twonk, I went to bed, cursing that I could be so stupid and that I could’ve actually done the whole Reaver missions, roamed though Reaver’s rear passage and possibly completed the game.... However, I have now completed it. :D Now I just have to complete it twice more to make a dent in my Gamerscore. Recently a demo was release for Fable: The Journey. Unfortunately, with having no internet link to Xbox Live, no Kinect and a 360 that would probably get the red ring of death if there was one connected to it, I asked a friend from the Devil May Cry forums to give me a synopsis of what the demo was about and what it's like. She did and Shadow has agreed to let me post her synopsis on this site. This is all in her own words and the rating is hers too. "Basically, the demo starts off with a basic update of what had happened in the Journey before then. It explains that Gabriel was cut off from his tribe of Dwellers and found Theresa, who was injured and who led him into this cavern. Then you start playing. In the cavern, you start off attacking statues as practice while a background voice speaks to Gabriel. I don't remember exactly what was said, but I do recall that, at one point, the voice mentions that the main Heroic line of the other games has died out (which really bugs me if it's true, but I'll have to get over it). The game leads you over this path, as you destroy more statues, learn to block attacks, and, eventually, you start fighting hobbes. It's a short, straight-forward fight, that's made tricky by the camera angles and that the hobes are so short. From there you have to use magic to knock down a door (welcome back, flit-switches) and you learn the fireball spell. In the next area you fight these spider-like creatures that...I'm guessing are like the rock mites in the Theresa short. And then bring on the hollow men. Once you get past those, you come to a statue, which speaks to Gabriel and tells him to reunite...erm...um...some kind of stones. I think they're supposed to be Heroic powers or something, but, by then, I was rather confused and so yeah. After vowing to collect them, you learn the Shard spell and you are allowed to leave after using Will to skewer a tomb with a giant sword. The tomb moves aside to reveal a hole, into which you jump...and land in a raging river. While in the river, you have to dodge obstacles before you hit a dry area. It looks empty at first, but don't be fooled. The game moves you forward and then the troll appears. The troll is your boss battle for the demo, and it was actually my favorite part. You have to fight the troll while: fighting hollow men, spider thingies, dodging boulders, and side-stepping the weird ground pulse thingie trolls do. When you wear the troll's life down far enough, you'll be prompted to use Will to drop another giant blade down, but this time onto the troll. You also have to drag it down deeper into the troll to kill it. Once it's dead, a trailer-like snip will begin and, after a moment, the demo will end. You can also upgrade Gabriel, look at collectables, look at options, etc. from the main menu. Not everything's available, though, because it's not a full game (naturally).
Gameplay for the demo was kinda weird, I have to admit. It felt strange without a controller for one main reason: you can't change the camera angle. And that became a little problematic. Hobbes, for instance, are so small you can barely see them at certain angles. Another thing, but this was small, that I don't like is because you can only move side to side. The game decides when you move forward. Which was frustrating, at times, but you used to, eventually. Casting spells is straight forward. Bring your dominant hand up and push forward to do a shock spell, the opposite hand is for force push. You can aftertouch, meaning add directions, etc. to a spell, force push to do a drag spell. And other spells for small projectiles being thrown. To block, you hold your non-dominant arm across your chest, and fireball is done by waving your dominant hand quickly in front of your shoulder (shard is cast by acting as if you're throwing a spear). You can also cast fireball or shard by standing at the ready and saying the spell name. Here's the one big bug that a lot of people, including myself, have found: the aiming is off. And badly. You can be doing the spell exactly as they instruct, but your spell can still get thrown in the wrong direction. You get used to it, but still...it's annoying in the middle of a battle. Otherwise, the graphics are beautiful. They're highly reminiscent of Fable III, but more detailed because it is first person POV. The spells are also pretty cool to look at. A few times, including in battle, I had to just stop and stare at the graphics. The story also seems interesting (there's no hints on if Reaver will be in it, other than the major part he plays in the novel apparently *still hasn't finished more than the prologue of the novel*), though I'm a bit too confused and I have a bit too many questions to know if I really had fun while I was playing it. There wasn't enough talking to say if the voice acting was good, though Gabriel had a couple slightly whiney moments. I'm a little worried about him growing Nero-ish (Devil May Cry 4). Aaaaaaand, I still kinda wonder whyit's a kinect game if you're sitting the entire time you play. @_@" Shadow's Score: 8-8.5/10 Shadow tells me that everytime she plays the demo, the more she likes it. Utter and total credit goes to Shadow for the review of the Demo. As does my utmost gratitude for letting me use it. Thank you. |
